The affectionate name
De Tijuana a Tijuas
Tijuana is the city's name. Tijuas is what we call it with love. Here's what's documented, kept apart from what we still don't know.
Documented history
“Tijuas” is an affectionate name for Tijuana used by its own people. In an article in Harvard's ReVista, posted on December 29, 2003, Richard Mora wrote that many young Tijuanenses call their home “Tijuas”, while tourists say “T.J.”
We haven't found who started saying it or since when, nor a published explanation of how the word formed. So we don't invent an origin.
It isn't the same as where the name “Tijuana” comes from. See the Tía Juana legend and the records →
When did you start saying Tijuas? Tell us where you first heard it. We review every memory before publishing it. Tell my story →
